SPT's Chair talks to a national conference on Commonwealth Games plans.
Chair looks at Olympic lessons
July 3, 2009 NewsLearning lessons from the 2012 Olympics in London and maximising legacy are key to a successful Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, SPT Chair Alistair Watson told a national transport conference.
Councillor Watson was speaking at Transport Planning for Major Sporting Events 2009 at the Barbican Conference Centre in London's East End.
Alongside those involved in the Olympics project, he detailed what SPT hopes to see implemented in Glasgow for the Games in 2014.
Questions from the audience focused on Park and Ride, cutting carbon emissions and how best to encourage Games travellers to leave their cars behind.
SPT's Chair also touched on plans to talk to other agencies involved in large scale events about including the cost of buses in ticket prices, giving consumers a "free" alternative.
Later in the day, he attended a masterclass held by campaign group Passenger Focus entitled "Happy passengers, happier spectators".
Councillor Watson said: "It was an extremely worthwhile event, and interesting to discuss the common ground we share our colleagues involved in transport planning for the London Olympics.
"There was a lot of interest too in the plans we have for Glasgow - from our Fastlink project to the modernisation of our Subway. It is important that we learn from each other and capitalise on the opportunities for legacy that these events bring."
